Stripe closed my account with money in it. What now?
Last updated October 12, 2026
Stripe usually holds the balance for 120 days from the closure email to cover refunds and chargebacks, then runs a formal review that can release the money, keep holding it, or cancel the payout. Don't close the account yourself. Appeal with evidence, keep handling refunds and disputes, export your data, and apply elsewhere with full disclosure.
What happens to my money when Stripe closes my account?
Stripe typically pauses payouts for 120 days, uses the balance to cover refunds and disputes, then reviews what's left. Stripe's Unacceptable Risk Policy (updated July 29, 2026) says that when it closes or restricts an account under that policy, it will "typically restrict or pause payouts to the User's bank account for 120 days from the date the User receives the initial email" (Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy, §6). Merchants recognize the line: "Stripe closed my account and is holding 100% of my funds for 120 days" (X post).
During those 120 days the balance covers refunds, disputes and chargebacks, and Stripe says it can reach zero before day 120. Then Stripe does a formal review with three listed outcomes:
- Release all or part of the balance.
- Keep holding all or part of it "pending further review."
- Cancel the payout "on the basis that the unacceptable risk posed by the User's account will continue."
(Same policy, §6–7). → How long can Stripe hold funds?
What does the contract say?
The 120 days is policy, not a contract term. Stripe's Services Agreement sets no release date for reserved funds:
- A reserve is released "only if, and to the extent that, Stripe is satisfied that the relevant risk exposure has been mitigated" (Stripe SSA Service Terms, Reserve).
- "Unless otherwise agreed in writing, Stripe may terminate this Agreement or close User's Stripe Account at any time" (Stripe SSA).
- The 180-day cap in Stripe's docs applies to reserves a platform sets on a connected account through Stripe Connect, not to Stripe's own holds on a direct account (Stripe Docs, Connected account reserves).
Is a 120-day hold normal?
It's been called standard. A UK Financial Ombudsman decision on a Stripe closure called 120 days "reasonably standard within the industry," and also awarded the merchant 8% simple interest plus £250 because Stripe kept pushing the release date without showing the risk was ongoing (FOS decision DRN-6072193). That's a UK ruling, not US law, but it's the clearest published line between a normal hold and an unreasonable one. The reason holds exist: if you can't cover chargebacks, the bank behind the processor pays, and the OCC says that liability "can span several months of the merchant's sales volume" (OCC Comptroller's Handbook: Merchant Processing).
Why did Stripe close my account "for no reason"?
There usually is a reason; Stripe just doesn't have to tell you. Its policy says decisions "may be based on confidential criteria" (Unacceptable Risk Policy, §7), and the Ombudsman found "no specific obligation on Stripe to explain" (DRN-6072193). Merchants put it bluntly: "Stripe can shut down your business in one email and then refuse to tell you what you actually did wrong" (X post). The common causes:
1. You sell something on Stripe's prohibited or restricted list. Stripe's list (updated September 22, 2026) prohibits, among others:
- "Incorrectly labeled research chemicals"
- "Pseudo-pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims"
- "Negative option marketing… reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing"
- "Games of chance including… sweepstakes and contests, and fantasy sports leagues with a monetary or material prize"
(Stripe Prohibited and Restricted Businesses). Restricted categories need Stripe's approval first, and Stripe's FAQ says its "review upon account activation ultimately determines whether a business is supported" (Stripe FAQ). Stripe keeps reviewing afterwards, using "machine learning models, heuristics and human reviews" (URP).
2. The catch-all. Stripe can suspend or terminate when your activity "presents an unacceptable risk" (SSA Service Terms).
3. Your numbers spiked. A big order or a one-off large payment can look like risk even when it's legitimate. Stripe may "refuse to process, or condition or suspend any Transaction" (SSA Service Terms).
4. Disputes and fraud. Visa's monitoring ratio counts fraud reports plus disputes against settled transactions: (TC40 + TC15) ÷ TC05. In the US the card-not-present merchant "Excessive" line dropped to 1.5% on April 1, 2026, with a minimum of 1,500 events a month (Visa VAMP fact sheet). Stripe's own thresholds aren't public, and processors can act well below Visa's line. → What chargeback ratio is too high?
5. The network or bank made the call. Every merchant agreement must give Visa the right to limit or terminate it (Visa Core Rules §1.5.2.1, Apr 18, 2026).
Stripe closed my account. What should I do now?
Get the reason in writing, export every record, and keep refunding customers. Don't open a new LLC to hide the closure. In order:
Today
- Don't close the account. You need it for refunds, disputes, reports and any appeal.
- Read the email closely. Note the reason category, any appeal link and any deadline.
- Record your balances: pending, available and reserved, with the date.
- Export everything: payments, payouts, disputes, customers and invoices.
- Take Stripe off your checkout so customers don't hit a dead payment form.
This week
- Appeal if Stripe offers one, with evidence, not arguments: supplier invoices, fulfillment and tracking records, refund policy, screenshots of your live site, and a plain description of what you sell. The policy allows a second appeal if the first fails (Unacceptable Risk Policy, §5).
- Keep fighting disputes and refunding customers who ask. Every lost dispute comes out of the held balance. The FOS decision noted disputes rose after the account was blocked (DRN-6072193).
- Know your bank account is exposed. Stripe's terms authorize it to debit your linked bank account for amounts you owe, and you waive the right to revoke that "to the extent Law permits" (SSA, Debit Authorization). Network fines are passed on too: "User is responsible for all Assessed Fines" (SSA Service Terms). The held balance isn't the ceiling on what you can lose.
Within 30 days
- Move your saved cards if you bill subscriptions. Stripe will transfer card data only to another "PCI DSS Level 1-compliant payment processor" through its data-migration process (Stripe Docs, payment data export). Start early.
- Line up processing that underwrites what you actually sell (below).
Day 120
- Watch for the formal-review email. If Stripe extends the hold, ask in writing for the reason and a new date, and keep every reply. Stripe's policy notes "you can submit a complaint to Stripe online" (URP). If the amount is large, a lawyer's letter may be worth the cost.
Am I on the MATCH list now?
Not automatically: a listing needs a MATCH reason. Two different things get confused:
- Stripe's internal records. Stripe can decline to work with you again without telling the networks. One founder found exactly that: "Stripe just had me on an internal list" (X post).
- Mastercard MATCH. A shared file of merchants terminated for specific reasons. If you were terminated for a listed reason, the acquiring bank must add you (Mastercard Security Rules and Procedures, Merchant Edition, §7.1.1, Feb 11, 2025). Stripe's docs say "A MATCH listing generally disqualifies a merchant from processing with Stripe" (Stripe Docs, Terminated merchant files).
Two listing reasons have hard numbers:
| Code | Reason | Threshold (Mastercard SPME §11.14.1) |
|---|---|---|
| 04 | Excessive chargebacks | Chargebacks over the previous 3 months exceeded 1.5% of sales transactions in that month and totaled at least US$5,000 |
| 05 | Excessive fraud | Fraud-to-sales dollar ratio of 8%+ over 3 months and 10+ fraud transactions totaling at least US$5,000 |
Other codes include transaction laundering (03) and violation of standards, which covers inaccurate transaction data such as the MCC (10).
If you are listed:
- It lasts five years, then is purged (§11.10).
- Early removal is narrow: the listing bank reports an error, or a PCI listing (code 12) is cleared once you're compliant (§11.13).
- The listing bank must give you its ICA number and the reason code (§11.4). Stripe's docs point merchants to matchbusinessowner@mastercard.com (Stripe Docs).
- A listing is not a ban: "an Acquirer may onboard a MATCH Merchant listed in MATCH Pro" (§11.6.4). Expect "more onerous terms, such as higher fees and heightened monitoring" (FTC v. 5967 Ventures (Humboldt) complaint, ¶30).
→ Full detail: MATCH list: how long it lasts and how to get off it
What makes a Stripe closure worse?
- Opening a new Stripe account under another name or entity. MATCH matches on tax IDs, addresses, URLs and up to five principal owners' names and IDs (SPME §11.2, §11.6). The FTC's order against Paddle bans "using shell companies to apply for additional Merchant Accounts" (FTC v. Paddle order).
- Hiding the closure on your next application. Mastercard requires acquiring banks to get your statement about previous merchant agreements (SPME §7.1.2). Leaving it out is misrepresentation.
- Buying a disguised setup. Running sales through a merchant account set up for a different business is transaction laundering (MATCH code 03); misdescribing your business in transaction data is code 10 (SPME §11.14.1).
- Ignoring disputes during the hold. Lost disputes drain the balance, and the chargeback count follows you into underwriting.
- Trusting a sales rep's "you're fine." As one merchant put it, "verbal approval means nothing" (r/PaymentProcessing). Get approval in writing, for your actual product list.
Where can I process after Stripe closed my account?
Apply for a direct merchant account with a bank that underwrites what you sell before you take a payment. Stripe is a payment facilitator: you were one of many merchants under its relationship with its banks, and its terms let it close you at any time. A direct merchant account (MID) is underwritten by an acquiring bank that knows your business up front. It isn't immune to closure, but the terms, including any reserve, are negotiated and written down. → High-risk merchant account requirements
What an underwriter will ask for:
- Formation documents, EIN, and ID for the principal owners; the acquiring bank must verify them and check MATCH (SPME §7.1.1).
- Your Stripe closure email and your recent statements. Disclose them.
- A business bank account in the company's name. → High-risk business bank account
- A website that passes review. Visa requires your customer-service contact and merchant country on the checkout screen or within the checkout flow; "A link to a separate web page does not meet this requirement" (Visa Core Rules §5.8.4.1).
- Supplier invoices or distributor authorization for what you sell.
- Dispute history and what you changed to fix it.
- Expect test purchases and an affiliate review: industry underwriting guidelines include "Secret Shopping" and "Affiliate/Affiliate Network Marketing Review" (ETA Guidelines, 4th ed., table of contents).
Expect a reserve at first. The OCC describes holdback reserves for high-risk merchants as a standard control (OCC Handbook). Negotiate it as part of the approval. → Rolling reserves
Vertical notes:
- RUO peptides. The label isn't enough. The FDA's 2026 warning letters disregarded "research use only" labels when the site showed human use, citing bacteriostatic water sold alongside peptides and on-site peptide calculators and guides (Gram Peptides, Mar 31, 2026; Royal Peptides, Aug 24, 2026). → Does Stripe allow peptides? · Peptide payment processing
- Supplements. Trial structure and claims are what get supplement brands cut. Visa requires simple online cancellation and a notice at least 7 days before a trial ends (Visa Core Rules §5.8.11.1, Table 5-21).
- Sweepstakes and gaming. Stripe prohibits sweepstakes and games of skill with a prize (Stripe list), so no appeal fixes that. You need a bank that underwrites gaming, with your legal position documented.

What this means for your file
The facts above are what an underwriter can check. We use them to build the file and place it with an acquiring bank that already takes the MCC. The bank still decides.

Questions
Can Stripe keep my money forever?
Stripe's policy says it typically holds payouts for 120 days, then reviews. After that it may release, keep holding, or cancel the payout if it decides the risk continues. The contract releases reserves only when Stripe is satisfied the risk is mitigated, with no fixed date. A UK ombudsman penalized repeated unexplained extensions in one case.
Will Stripe tell me why it closed my account?
Usually only a category. Stripe's policy says decisions may be based on confidential criteria, and the UK Ombudsman found no specific obligation on Stripe to explain. Use the appeal to supply facts, not to demand reasons.
Can I still refund my customers?
Do it through the Stripe account while it's open, and keep the account open for that reason. Customers who don't get a refund tend to file chargebacks, which come out of your held balance.
Can I open a new Stripe account?
Not as a workaround. MATCH matches on owners, tax IDs, addresses and URLs, and the FTC's Paddle order bans using shell companies to get more merchant accounts. If the closure was a mistake, appeal. If your business is on Stripe's list, go to a provider that underwrites it.
Do I lose my subscribers' saved cards?
Not necessarily. Stripe transfers stored card data only to a PCI DSS Level 1 compliant processor, through its data-migration process. Start the request as soon as you have the new processor's details.
Am I on the MATCH list?
Only if the termination fits a MATCH reason code. Excessive chargebacks (code 04) means over 1.5% and at least $5,000 in chargebacks over three months. Ask Stripe in writing whether a listing was made and under what code. Mastercard's merchant contact is matchbusinessowner@mastercard.com.
Can Stripe take money from my bank account?
Yes, for amounts you owe after the balance runs out, such as negative balances from refunds, disputes or card-network fines. Stripe's terms authorize debits to your linked bank account and waive revocation to the extent the law permits.
