How long can Stripe hold your funds?
Last updated October 12, 2026
Usually 120 days. That's Stripe's stated practice after it closes or restricts an account for risk, followed by a formal review. The contract itself sets no maximum: reserved funds are released only when Stripe is satisfied the risk has passed. The one hard cap, 180 days, applies to reserves a platform sets on connected accounts through Stripe Connect.
Why is Stripe holding my money?
Because Stripe either closed or restricted your account for risk, put a reserve on an open account, or a platform you sell through set a reserve. Each has different rules. Merchants usually mean the first: "€84,000 is now frozen for up to 120 days and our customers can no longer pay on our store" (X post).
| Situation | What it is | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Account closed or restricted for risk | Payouts paused after Stripe's risk decision | "Typically" 120 days from the first email, then a formal review (Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy) |
| Reserve on an open account | A share of your balance held against refunds and disputes | Until Stripe "is satisfied that the relevant risk exposure has been mitigated" (Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms) |
| Reserve set by a platform (Connect) | A marketplace or platform holds part of a connected account's funds | "You can't reserve funds for longer than 180 days" (Stripe Docs) |
If you were shut down, it's the first row. → Stripe closed my account with money in it
Stripe is holding my funds for 120 days. What happens after?
A formal review that can release the money, keep holding it, or cancel the payout. Stripe's Unacceptable Risk Policy (updated July 29, 2026) says it will typically restrict or pause payouts for 120 days from the date you receive the initial email. During that time your balance pays for refunds, disputes and chargebacks. At the end Stripe runs a formal review with three possible outcomes: release the funds, keep holding them, or cancel the payout (Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy).
Why 120 days: it lines up with Visa's time limit for fraud disputes, which is 120 calendar days from the transaction's processing date (Visa Core Rules §11.7.2.4 and §11.7.3.4, Apr 18, 2026). The bank behind a processor stays liable for chargebacks long after the sale, and the OCC notes that this contingent liability "can span several months of the merchant's sales volume" (OCC Merchant Processing handbook).
Can Stripe hold my money longer than 120 days?
Yes. The 120 days is Stripe's stated practice, not a contract limit, and the policy lists "pending further review" as one outcome. The Stripe Services Agreement gives Stripe wide room:
- No end date on reserves. Funds are released "only if, and to the extent that, Stripe is satisfied that the relevant risk exposure has been mitigated" (Service Terms, Reserve).
- More than one way to fund a reserve. Stripe can use funds you provide on request, funds it owes you from your transactions, or debit your bank accounts (Service Terms, Reserve funding).
- Fines get passed on. Card-network fines tied to your account ("Assessed Fines") can be charged to you (Service Terms).
- Debits after the balance runs out. You authorize Stripe to debit your linked bank account for amounts you owe, and waive the right to revoke that authorization "to the extent Law permits" (Stripe Services Agreement, Debit Authorization).
Is a 120-day hold normal? How do PayPal and Shopify compare?
It's within the range other providers write into their terms. PayPal and Shopify both reserve similar powers:
| Provider | Stated hold or reserve terms |
|---|---|
| Stripe | 120 days after a risk closure, then review; reserves released when Stripe is satisfied (URP; SSA) |
| Stripe Connect platforms | Reserve on a connected account capped at 180 days (Stripe Docs) |
| PayPal | Risk-based holds "generally remain in place for up to 21 days"; funds tied to a challenged payment are generally held "no longer than 180 days," and longer where law requires; example reserve of "10%… held for a 90-day rolling period" (PayPal User Agreement, Sep 14, 2026) |
| Shopify Payments | May hold "a certain amount (including the full amount)" of funds; can fund the reserve by debiting your bank account (Shopify Payments Terms) |
| High-risk merchant account | Set in your merchant agreement; reserve percentage, hold days and release schedule should be written into the contract → Rolling reserves |
A UK ombudsman ruling called a 120-day hold "reasonably standard," but ordered Stripe to pay 8% interest plus £250 where it kept extending the hold without good reason (Financial Ombudsman Service, DRN-6072193). That's UK-only and one case, but it shows where the line sits: 120 days is accepted, open-ended extensions are not.
What should I do while Stripe holds my money?
Keep the account open, answer every dispute, refund customers who ask, and get processing elsewhere with full disclosure. In order:
Today
- Read the closure email and save it. The 120 days run from that date.
- Don't close the account. You need it to issue refunds and answer disputes, and both come out of the held balance anyway.
- Download your transaction, customer and dispute data.
This week
- Appeal with evidence if the closure was a mistake (what you sell, fulfillment proof, low dispute history).
- Refund customers who ask. A refund costs less than a chargeback fee plus the chargeback.
- If you bill subscribers, ask Stripe to export saved card data to your next processor; Stripe only exports to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor (Stripe Docs).
Day 120
- Put a calendar reminder on day 120. If nothing arrives, ask in writing for the review outcome and the remaining balance.
- If funds are held past the review with no explanation, use Stripe's complaint route (its policy notes "you can submit a complaint to Stripe online" (URP)); UK businesses may also have an ombudsman route. For large sums, talk to a lawyer about the contract.
Meanwhile
- Line up a second processor, with full disclosure. → High-risk merchant account requirements
What makes a Stripe hold last longer?
Unanswered disputes, unrefunded customers and anything that looks like evasion. Specifically:
- Letting disputes go unanswered. Every lost chargeback comes out of your held funds.
- Opening a new Stripe account under another name. Mastercard's MATCH system matches on tax IDs, addresses, URLs and principal owners' names and IDs (SPME §11.6, Feb 11, 2025), and the FTC's Paddle order bans using shell companies to get more merchant accounts (FTC v. Paddle order).
- Charging customers for orders you can't ship. Visa tells merchants not to deposit until they've shipped (Visa Dispute Management Guidelines).
- Assuming a hold means MATCH. A listing needs a MATCH reason code, such as excessive chargebacks (code 04). → MATCH list
Where can I process so this doesn't happen again?
With a bank that underwrites what you sell before you take a payment, under a contract that states the reserve and hold terms in numbers. That doesn't make holds impossible, but it replaces "at Stripe's discretion" with terms you negotiated. → High-risk merchant account requirements · Rolling reserves
How Break Free Finance helps
We can't get Stripe funds released. We place high-risk payment processing with banks that underwrite what you sell, ask for reserve terms in writing up front, and look at more than one rail so one account is not the whole business. Tell us what happened. Every account is subject to the bank's underwriting; no approval is guaranteed.

Questions
Can Stripe hold my money for 180 days?
Stripe's own policy for risk closures says it typically holds payouts for 120 days, then reviews. The contract has no fixed maximum: reserves are released when Stripe is satisfied the risk is gone. The 180-day cap in Stripe's docs applies to reserves a platform places on connected accounts through Stripe Connect.
When does the 120 days start?
From the date you receive Stripe's initial email about the restriction or closure, according to Stripe's Unacceptable Risk Policy. Save that email and count from it.
What happens at the end of the 120 days?
Stripe runs a formal review. It can release the remaining balance, keep holding it, or cancel the payout if it finds the risk continues. If you hear nothing, ask in writing for the outcome.
Will I get interest on held funds?
Stripe's terms don't promise interest: they say you have no right to earnings generated by a reserve. A UK ombudsman did award 8% interest in one case where a provider kept extending a hold without good reason, but that ruling only applies to UK complaints.
Can Stripe take money from my bank account while holding my funds?
Yes. The Stripe Services Agreement authorizes debits to your linked bank account for amounts you owe, such as negative balances from refunds, disputes or card-network fines, and lets Stripe fund reserves that way.
How long does PayPal hold funds compared with Stripe?
PayPal's User Agreement says risk-based holds generally last up to 21 days, funds tied to a challenged payment are generally held no longer than 180 days, and it gives an example rolling reserve of 10% held for 90 days.
Can I speed up the release?
You can't force it, but you can shorten the risk: refund promptly, answer every dispute, keep the account open, and give Stripe proof of fulfillment. Those reduce what the balance has to cover by day 120.
