Can you sell peptides on Shopify?

By David Ruderman

Last updated October 12, 2026

You can build the store on Shopify, but Shopify Payments won't reliably process research peptides. In the US, Shopify Payments runs on Stripe and PayPal and takes its prohibited lists from them, and Stripe bans incorrectly labeled research chemicals. Peptide stores on Shopify need a third-party payment provider backed by a bank that approved them for what they sell.

Can Shopify ban my peptide store?

Shopify Payments can stop processing for it and hold the funds; that's separate from the store itself. Merchants describe it as "2 days ago shopify decided to randomly ban my shopify payments account" (r/shopify).

Shopify is the store platform. Shopify Payments is the built-in checkout processing, and it's a separate set of terms. Most peptide sellers who get shut down on Shopify lose Shopify Payments, not the store.

Shopify's US processors for Shopify Payments are Stripe and PayPal (Shopify processor list). You authorize Shopify "to determine which Payment Processor Account(s) we will facilitate opening on your behalf" (Shopify Payments Terms). And the US terms say the prohibited and restricted business categories "are provided by each Payment Processor" (Shopify Payments Terms).

What do those lists say about peptides?

Stripe allows research peptides only conditionally, and Shopify's own page lists pseudo pharmaceuticals as ineligible.

So even a careful RUO store sits in a category the underlying processor tolerates only conditionally, under terms that let Shopify hold funds.

Why is Shopify holding my payouts?

Because the terms let Shopify hold some or all of a transaction's funds in a reserve. Specifically, Shopify can:

  • Hold "a certain amount (including the full amount) of the funds received for a Transaction" in a reserve (Shopify Payments Terms).
  • Fund that reserve from your payouts or by debiting your payout account, with no interest paid to you (Shopify Payments Terms).
  • Ask for "business invoices, reseller authorization or distributor information" to verify what you sell (Shopify Payments Terms).

In merchants' words: "Got Shopify Payments banned selling supplements is this just the reality of this industry now?" (r/PaymentProcessing) and "payouts will be hold till OCTOBER 2026" (r/ShopifyeCommerce). Individual reports, not statistics.

Which high-risk payment gateway works with Shopify for peptides?

One of Shopify's third-party providers, backed by a bank that underwrites your store. Shopify supports over 100 third-party credit card providers (Shopify Help, Third-party payment providers); the provider and its acquiring bank underwrite your store instead of Shopify Payments. What to know:

  1. Shopify charges a fee on third-party transactions, on top of your provider's fees, and it applies "even when Shopify Payments is activated" (Shopify Help). The rate depends on your plan and location; check the Shopify pricing page or ask Shopify Support (Shopify Help, third-party transaction fees).
  2. Don't run Shopify Payments alongside the gateway. If Shopify Payments is activated next to a third-party provider, Shopify says it "automatically acts as a backup for eligible failed card transactions" (Shopify Help). Shopify also says stores on Basic, Shopify and Advanced plans that used Shop Pay Express were moved to this model automatically, with payment recovery "automatically activated for eligible card transactions" (same page). For a peptide store, that sends declined orders back into the processor whose rules you're trying to stay clear of. Check whether Shopify Payments is active in your Payments settings, and ask Shopify Support how to turn it off fully.
  3. Shopify's platform rules still apply. Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy says "you're responsible for following the rules of your platform, your partners, and the law," and that Shopify doesn't like to see people try to "game" systems (Shopify Acceptable Use Policy).
  4. The provider must actually integrate with Shopify. Ask for the exact integration before you sign.

How do I get my peptide store ready for underwriting?

The bank behind your gateway will read the store the way the FDA does. Its 2026 warning letters cited:

Shopify-specific clean-up:

  • Apps and theme blocks: remove review apps showing human-use testimonials, dosing "calculators," and upsell apps that bundle BAC water.
  • Product tags, collections and SEO fields: these are public. "Weight loss" collections and dosing in meta descriptions are visible to reviewers.
  • Checkout: Visa requires customer-service contact and merchant country on the checkout screen or within the checkout flow; "A link to a separate web page does not meet this requirement" (Visa Core Rules §5.8.4.1). Don't rely on the footer.
  • Policies: refund, shipping and terms pages filled in, not Shopify's template text.
  • COAs linked from each product.

How do I switch a peptide store to a high-risk gateway?

Audit, build the file, apply with full disclosure, then switch. Step by step:

  1. Audit the store (list above).
  2. Assemble the underwriting file. → High-risk merchant account requirements
  3. Apply with full disclosure to a provider and bank that underwrite RUO and integrate with Shopify. → Peptide payment processing
  4. Install the provider and make sure Shopify Payments isn't active alongside it (see the backup and payment-recovery point above).
  5. Run test transactions, check the descriptor, check the payout schedule against your contract.
  6. Keep a second rail ready (ACH or a second account) in case the first one ends. Know the hold rules before you need them. → Rolling reserves

What gets peptide stores on Shopify shut down?

  • Running peptides through Shopify Payments "until they notice." When they notice, the funds are held.
  • Hiding peptides behind a password page or a second store with a different name. That's not disclosure, and Mastercard's monitoring program covers all of a merchant's URLs, including members-only areas (SPME §8.9).
  • Leaving Shopify Payments active, so payment recovery retries declined orders through it.
  • Assuming a gateway that works on Shopify is approved for peptides. Ask who the acquiring bank is and whether it reviewed your store.

What this means for your file

The facts above are what an underwriter can check. We use them to build the file and place it with an acquiring bank that already takes the MCC. The bank still decides.

Questions

Does Shopify allow peptides?

Shopify the platform can host the store, but in the US Shopify Payments takes its prohibited lists from Stripe and PayPal, Stripe bans incorrectly labeled research chemicals, and Shopify lists pseudo pharmaceuticals as ineligible. Peptide stores generally need a third-party payment provider.

Why did Shopify Payments put my peptide store on hold?

Shopify Payments can hold some or all of a transaction's funds in a reserve and ask for invoices or distributor information. Peptides fall in categories the underlying processors restrict, so reviews and holds are common.

What payment gateway can I use for peptides on Shopify?

A third-party provider that integrates with Shopify and is backed by an acquiring bank that knowingly underwrites research-use-only sellers. Ask the provider to name the bank and confirm it reviewed your store.

Does Shopify charge extra if I don't use Shopify Payments?

Yes. Shopify charges third-party transaction fees on transactions through third-party gateways, even when Shopify Payments is activated, on top of your provider's fees. Check the Shopify pricing page or Support for your rate.

Should I keep Shopify Payments on as a backup?

Not for a peptide store. Shopify says Shopify Payments automatically acts as a backup for eligible failed card transactions when activated alongside a third-party provider, and some stores were moved to that setup automatically. That routes declined peptide orders back through Shopify Payments.

Can I move my Shopify Payments saved cards to a new processor?

Possibly without migrating at all. Shopify's help center says that if your customers' payment methods are already vaulted in Shopify, you can change your primary gateway, for example from Shopify Payments to Authorize.net, after Shopify Support confirms your setup doesn't require migration.
