RTP vs FedNow vs wire: which rail fits your business?

By David Ruderman

Last updated October 12, 2026

All three are US credit-push rails with final settlement. Fedwire runs business days only and is built for large-value payments. RTP and FedNow run 24/7/365 with a $10 million network cap, and banks can set lower limits. Which rails you get is your bank's choice, not the network's.

Instant isn't the hard part. Getting a bank that will turn it on for your business is.

What are the limits?

  • RTP: $10 million per transaction. A sending bank can set a lower limit. A receiving bank can't (RTP Operating Rules, effective Oct 4, 2026).
  • FedNow: $10 million per credit transfer since November 12, 2025. Banks can set lower limits (Federal Reserve).
  • Same Day ACH, for comparison: $1 million per payment, rising to $10 million on September 17, 2027 (Nacha).

The limit you actually get is the one your bank sets. Ask for it in writing.

When does each rail make sense?

  • Fedwire: large business-day payments, closings, treasury moves. Customer transfers cut off at 6:45 p.m. ET and the service is closed weekends and Fed holidays.
  • RTP or FedNow: payouts, nights and weekends, anything where waiting until Monday costs you. Only works if both banks participate.
  • Same Day ACH: cheaper batch payments that can wait hours, not seconds.

Can an instant payment be pulled back?

Treat it as final. All three settle with finality. On Fedwire, a return is a request to the receiving bank, not a right (Federal Reserve). Verify the beneficiary before you send.

What about international payments?

RTP and FedNow are US domestic services. Cross-border dollar payments usually run as wires through correspondent banks. See correspondent banking explained.

Why might a bank not give you instant payments?

Instant, final money is harder to stop if something is wrong. Banks weigh that against your business. Expect questions about who you pay, why, how much, and how you verify recipients.

What this means for your file

The facts above are what an underwriter can check. We use them to build the file and place it with an acquiring bank that already takes the MCC. The bank still decides.
