Sponsor bank or BaaS platform: which does your fintech need?

A direct sponsor bank is your own relationship with the bank. A BaaS platform sits between you and a sponsor bank. Either way, regulators hold the bank responsible for your program, and enforcement against the bank can freeze your growth. Foreign fintechs often need the US bank either way. We introduce both routes. The bank decides.

We place payment processing, business banking and crypto rails for high-growth, complex businesses with institutions that take the industry, then watch the chargeback ratios, reserves and reviews that get accounts closed, with more than one rail so one bank's no doesn't stop the business. Approval is never guaranteed.

RouteWhat it is
Direct sponsor-bank relationshipYou and the bank. More work. Fewer layers.
BaaS platform on a sponsor bankFaster to launch. You inherit the platform's bank, and its exit.

Who is responsible for the program?

The bank. Federal guidance says using third parties doesn't reduce a bank's responsibility for safety and compliance (2023 Interagency Guidance). Agencies proposed updated guidance on September 11, 2026; it isn't final (OCC NR 2026-77).

What can go wrong with a platform in the middle?

Regulators list operational, compliance, liquidity and concentration risk, end-user confusion, and deposit insurance misrepresentation in these arrangements (OCC Bulletin 2024-20). And if the sponsor bank is sanctioned, everyone on it feels it. In 2024 the Federal Reserve required one sponsor bank to get prior approval before adding new fintech partners (Federal Reserve, June 14, 2024).

Which should you pick?

  • Direct sponsor bank: more work, fewer layers, your relationship.
  • BaaS platform: faster launch, but you inherit the platform's bank and its exit.

Where Break Free Finance fits

We're not a bank, processor, or money transmitter. We structure the deal, build the file, and place it with institutions in our network: decades of relationships with 40+ financial institutions and solution providers. The institution decides, and approval is never guaranteed. We can't release funds another provider is holding.
