Banks for crypto companies: the routes, compared
Crypto companies reach a bank through a few routes: a bank with a digital-asset program, a traditional bank for an operating company, a fintech account, a non-US e-money institution, or an introducer. US national banks are allowed to serve crypto firms; whether one will serve you is its call. We are the introducer. Approval is never guaranteed.
We place payment processing, business banking and crypto rails for high-growth, complex businesses with institutions that take the industry, then watch the chargeback ratios, reserves and reviews that get accounts closed, with more than one rail so one bank's no doesn't stop the business. Approval is never guaranteed.
How Break Free Finance is paid: [to be added].
| Route | What it is |
|---|---|
| Banks with a digital-asset program | Built to review exchanges, OTC desks and adjacent companies. |
| Traditional banks for operating companies | Sometimes a fit when the activity is adjacent, not the trading venue itself. |
| Fintech or BaaS accounts | A partner bank sits behind the app. Its appetite can change. |
| Non-US e-money institutions | An option for some international groups. Not a US bank account. |
| Placement through an introducer | What we do. The bank still underwrites. |
Are US banks allowed to bank crypto companies?
Yes. In March 2025 the OCC confirmed national banks may provide crypto custody, certain stablecoin activities and node participation, and dropped its prior non-objection requirement (OCC, Mar 7, 2025). Permission isn't appetite.
What decides which route works?
What you are. FinCEN generally treats exchangers and administrators of convertible virtual currency as money transmitters (FIN-2019-G001), with registration required (31 CFR 1022.380). An exchange needs a different bank than a software company that holds some crypto.
Why don't we publish a list of crypto-friendly banks?
Appetite changes, and a list goes stale fast. We'd rather match your file to a bank that's taking your kind of business now. See bank accounts for crypto companies.
Where Break Free Finance fits
We're not a bank, processor, or money transmitter. We structure the deal, build the file, and place it with institutions in our network: decades of relationships with 40+ financial institutions and solution providers. The institution decides, and approval is never guaranteed. We can't release funds another provider is holding.
